Conflicts and Natural Resources

Role of natural resources in conflict situations: potential, challenges and limitations

Do. 22. April 2010, 9.00 Uhr bis Fr. 23. April 2010, 17.30 Uhr

Access to and use of natural resources play an important role in many conflicts. Tensions often arise at local level in relation to access to essential resources such as land and water. In connection with other factors this can lead to violent clashes. In many countries valuable natural resources such as diamonds, oil, wood or drugs are used to finance violent groups. Climate change and the accompanying change of natural habitats will further aggravate existing potential for conflicts.

The training offers a general overview of the issue of natural resources and conflict. Suitable approaches of peace work will be looked at- with project work on the lower and middle societal levels in mind.
