Trauma and Peace Work

Identifying trauma and dealing with traumatised people

Mi. 8. Dezember 2010, 9.00 Uhr bis Fr. 10. Dezember 2010, 17.30 Uhr

War and violence have an impact on people's individual well-being, their ability to relate to others and to rebuild trust, consequences that have been termed as "trauma". However, as widely used the term may be - it remains difficult to adequately understand traumatic processes in conflict and post-conflict settings leave alone to find adequate ways of dealing with them. Also, people deal and react differently to traumatic experiences due to their cultural and social background and context, but also due to the fact that not every individual who has gone through difficult and violent experiences necessarily suffers from traumatic "symptoms". Thus, trauma is often ignored, put on the agenda of mental health experts or symptoms are misjudged as lack of motivation, laziness, “cultural” specialities etc. Accordingly, reactions are inappropriate. Another danger lies in over-using the concept of “trauma”, thereby trivialising it to something that almost everybody seems to go through on a daily basis. Finally, peace workers are as much subjected to the threat of being traumatised themselves through what they hear from others or what they experience themselves.

Therefore, peace workers need to be aware of the different dimensions and dynamics of individual and social trauma to properly deal with effected people and/or prevent being traumatized. At the same time non-experts cannot therapeutically treat trauma, and should therefore be able to draw a clear line between their contribution to psychosocial recovery and the work of “experts” in mental health.
