Intervention techniques in conflict situations

Mediation and negotiation generally play an important role in the work of Civil Peace Service peace experts. They advise conflict parties in mediation and negotiation processes, teach the appropriate skills in seminars or apply these methods themselves during their project work.
This training course introduces various methods of conflict intervention with a focus on negotiation and mediation. Using the model of conflict transformation developed by Diana Francis, participants learn when and how a third-party intervention is a sensible option. As well as teaching relevant methods, this course also offers a chance to discuss the following aspects of this topic: the peace experts’ perception of their own role; the idea of impartiality; building trust; shaping long-term change processes; and cultural influences.

- Presentation of various third-party intervention approaches (mediation, negotiation, arbitration, conciliation etc.)
- Practice of mediation and negotiation using practical examples
- Role perception and impartiality
- Confidence building; shaping change processes
- Examples of practical implementation with their scope and limits
- Cultural adaptation and differences, examples of local techniques to resolve conflicts

- You are familiar with various methods of third-party intervention and their application.
- You are capable of flexible, situation- and context-oriented behaviour, in both your own and other cultural contexts.

Sprachliche Anforderungen
A very good command of English is indispensable to be able to follow the course adequately and for good learning results. You have to be able to express yourself fluently and to understand detailed texts on complex subjects.

WICHTIGE HINWEISE
The Training for Peace is part of the 9-Week Qualification Course which is attended by 8 people aiming to be certified as "Peace and Conflict Consultant".
We offer an early bird price if you register up to six weeks in advance.
The Academy can not provide any scholarships itself, nor waive the training fee nor arrange funding by other organisations. Applicants who can not cover the training fee in full will not be considered!
When transfering the training fee from a non-german account, please have in mind that it might take up to three weeks until we receive the money and that there might be transfer charges to be paid by your side.
Cancellations shall be in writing only and be received 10 work days before the start of the course or event at the latest. Otherwise the AfC will charge the participant as follows:
- 10 to 3 work days before the course/event: 50% of all costs
- less than 3 work days/non-attendance without written cancellation: 100 % of all costs
If you should need a visa for Germany, please make sure to register at least six weeks before the start of the training. Since the visa application process takes quite a while, we cannot accept registrations later than this deadline.
