Analysing and Understanding conflicts

Standard tools of conflict analysis, their scope and limits: recognising and making use of peace potentials

Mon. 22. March 2010 until Fri. 26. March 2010

Usually there is much more to conflict than just a specific triggering event. Comprehensive conflict analysis is therefore imperative, especially for peace building projects. Accompanied by a deep understanding of conflicts, the causes and the background, an analysis will thus allow, for example, the definition of entry points for peace work or the appraisal of the potential impact of an external intervention.

Based on current theories and models of conflict and violence, the training will introduce methods of conflict analysis including practical examples. Participants will further gain an understanding of the relationship between culture and conflict.

Contents

  • Dynamics of conflict and violence (e.g. Friedrich Glasl)
  • Standard tools of conflict analysis
  • Understanding the impact of structures, actors and roles, ideas and concepts, culture and attitudes (in connection with questions of power, hierarchies, authority and legitimacy and phenomena such as nationalism, racism, sexism)
  • Identification of potentials for transformation and possible commonalities of opposing parties
  • After the analysis: Definition of entry points and development of strategies for conflict transformation

Learning Goals

  1. You can analyse and understand conflicts in interpersonal, group-related, societal and state contexts.
  2. You can identify concrete entry points for conflict transformation and you know their scope and limitations.
  3. You are aware of the relationship between culture and conflict.
