Peace and conflict sensitive impact analysis

Measuring social change and impacts of peace projects

Mon. 29. March 2010 until Wed. 31. March 2010

In the last few years the expectation that peace-building projects demonstrate their impact has risen dramatically. Particularly those projects focusing on societal change processes are influenced by numerous actors and factors. At the same time societal changes happen over long periods of time- well beyond the life-cycle of projects. Clear attribution of causality is near to impossible. An important point in this context is not to first measure impact at the end of a project, but to include it from the beginning in the planning and implementation phases. It is also just as important to not overlook possible negative impacts.

The training will introduce the most common methods of conflict-sensitive impact analysis with their strengths and weaknesses. Participants will put some of these into practice using concrete examples and real case studies. The training will also cover how to keep these often very complex methods manageable for even small teams.

Contents

  • State of art of the theory and practice of conflict-sensitive design and impact analysis (C[onflict]-value [K-Kennung], PCA, PCIA, "Outcome Mapping")
  • Risks and undesired consequences (Do No Harm approach)
  • Impact chains
  • Identifying indicators
  • Partner organisations' prospects, ownership, process-orientation (e.g. impact in conflict contexts), the learning organisation
  • Limits and scopes of methods
  • Case studies
