Ex-Combatants and Peace Work

Role and potential of Ex-Combatants in Peace Processes

Mon. 29. November 2010, 9.00 until Tue. 30. November 2010, 18.00

A first step in the transition from war to peace is the disarmament, demobilization, and re-integration (DDR) of ex-combatants. Disarmament and demobilization – taking out the arms – usually proves to be the easier task. The re-integration of ex-combatants seems often much more difficult. While excombatants have an important role in the establishment of a lasting peace, they are very often subjected to extensive blame and incrimination. Shame and trauma blocks their return to civil society.

What exactly is the role of ex-combatants for the peace process? Talking about re-integrating excombatants risks stigmatising them as the “baddies” and pushing them into a passive role. With a particular focus on the Balkans the training will include the analysis and exploration of the role of excombatants in the transitional phase from war to peace. Challenges will be addressed and practical entry points introduced.
