Many peace workers struggle to 'make time' for self-care in their daily lives. Such is the urgency and importance of the work that needs to be done, that many individuals, teams and organisations put self-care on the back burner. However, not practicing self-care can result in burn-out or even death of those in the frontlines.
Although self-care is often thought of as an individual task, it cannot be accomplished individually. We’re part of systems, and we need each other to be able to look after ourselves and for everyone to be well. Therefore, self-care is as much about developing support systems within our teams and organisations as it is about practicing personal wellbeing. In this seminar, we will practice self-care alone and together at an embodied, everyday level.

Online Live Sessions: From 5th October to 16th November; every Tuesday from 12:00 to 14:00 CET, plus take-off session on 28 September, 12:00-14:00 CET
Methodology: The trainer will use an elicitive approach to facilitation. Self-care is unique for each peace worker so participants will be highly encouraged to bring their own knowledge and experience and to use it to elicit what self-care means to them within the conflict setting unique to them.
Additionally, the trainer will offer a theoretical frame of reference drawing on her personal and professional experience of self-care within the field of peace activism, peace education, Nonviolent Communication, Mindfulness, Psychology and mental health, as well as living and working amidst violent conflict and humanitarian crisis.
Live Sessions (a 2-hour online session per week on Big Blue Button): Participants are expected to fully engage with BigBlueButton’s main features: video, audio, chat and whiteboard. The platform “Miro” will also be used for visual interactive learning.
Solo Practices (around 2 hours per week): These ensure that participants integrate their learning at an embodied, sustained, day-to-day level. Readings and exercises will take participants on a journey towards the acquisition of skills and deep understanding of the topic of each online session.
Buddy Practices (around 1 hour per week). These will allow participants to receive peer support at an individual, meaningful and applicable level. These guided exercises offer safety and structure for participants to explore mindful ways to be in each other’s presence. Moreover, these practices aim to consolidate an ‘Empathy Support System' for continued support after the course ends. Participants are expected to contact each other, schedule and meet online via audio or videocall for practicing for 1 hour per week. Buddies will rotate every other week.
Every other week participants will submit a reflection (between 150-300 words) of their learnings, discoveries, challenges or questions regarding the solo and buddy practices. This will allow the trainer to monitor engagement, spot participants’ difficulties and provide support.
Small Group Project (around 5 hours in total). This will give participants a space to dive deep, together, into the aspect of self-care they are most interested in and come up with an action plan. Projects will be presented to the rest of the group on sessions 4, 5 and 6.
Theoretical Input (around 30 mins per week). Screencasts will be given to participants ahead of sessions. Participants are expected to watch screencasts in advance and be ready to discuss and apply the content during the session. The purpose of this is to maximise practice time during the live session.
Total expected weekly hours: 2 hours live session, 4 hours home practice.
