Joan is a South African and is a specialist in Conflict Transformation with over 40 years experience in Africa, Asia and the Middle East and has significant expertise in strategic planning, mediation, dialogue, conflict sensitive approaches in humanitarian aid, development and peacebuilding. She is an independent conflict transformation practitioner and consultant in conflict transformation, based in Birmingham, UK. In addition to undertaking a range of consultancies and programmes internationally, Joan also teaches at MA level at several universities in the UK and teaches several modules at the Mindanao Peacebuilding Institute in the Philippines.
Joan started working for social and political change in South Africa. After the first democratic election she moved from resistance to apartheid to addressing issues of social reconstruction and has been working for social and political change ever since. She is a respected facilitator who works well in face-to-face and virtual settings. She is a member of the Board of Trustees of Peaceful Change initiative, a life member of the Coalition for Peace in Africa and serves on the advisory board of Concordis.
